THE MERMAID Lorelei

DESCRIPTION

Size: 47” x 43”

Materials: Hand Print from original glass carving on Canvas embellished with pen and ink.

The Mermaid Lorelei gazes from the depths, dispassionately tempting yet another sailor to his doom. This creation, which reigns as the first in the artist’s Mermaids series, requires some explanation: it is the culmination of multiple works of art, each unique in its own right. Beginning with a life-size sketch, the artist then applies that sketch to a specialized rubbery vinyl which adheres to the surface of a panel of glass.

Each line of the sketch was cut from the vinyl by hand and then carved into a 3/4” thick panel of glass. Once the glass carving was completed, The artist then soaked a canvas sheet and pressed the canvas into the crevices of the carved glass, taking a mold of the carving below.

The rubbing was then embellished with pen and ink to create the image you see here.

The original carved glass Lorelei resides in the lakeside home of a private collector in Woodinville, WA

Many of the techniques used in the creation of the original piece are incorporated into the artist’s unique reproductions. All reproductions are created by the artist and her team in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
